The power of IP-based wireless technology when combined with Digital Microwave Radio (DMR) and Fibre Optic backhaul can provide a number of wide area solutions. A unified platform like this can offer a number of services such as network telemetry, switching, access control, security monitoring or even traditional retail services such as broadband internet and VoIP.

By using optical transmission between substations and wireless delivery systems for the local area surrounding, it is possible to provide an efficient regional or wide area network. The use of All Dielectric Self Supporting (ADSS) cable between existing power poles is one possible way of deploying the Fibre Optic Cable (FOC). Conversely, direct buried or ducted FOC are other methods used today.

Extending the reach of the network beyond the substation or past the FOC route is possible using wireless delivery systems such as WiMAX. To deliver broadband to a cluster of subscriber homes is a reality using WiMAX where a share of 10Mbs is typical. These solutions allow the network providers to offer efficient private network services or a pathway for retail services.
